Note the beetles in the center of the flower. The flower does not appear to have any pistils, and perhaps they have eaten them.

Habit, growing in partial shade at base of juniper.

Flowers and immature fruit.
The National Park Service is attempting to restore many formerly barren areas with local native plants, and this individual was undoubtedly planted. It is growing in a well-mulched traffic island near the Backcountry Office in Grand Canyon Village. The planted specimens are much more robust than the wild individuals (such as the one shown at the top of this page), and they probably received too much pampering when young for the purposes of true restoration.
